The shawl ministry
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry at The Dayton Presbyterian Church serves as an outreach to provide comfort, caring, love, solace and shelter to anyone in need. The Shawl is an age old symbol of our inclusive, unconditionally loving God, and the members of our ministry help to spread God's love with our homemade gifts.
Each hand knitted or crocheted shawl begins with prayer for the crafter, the materials and continual prayer for the recipient during its creation. A final blessing is given by the group as our shawls are presented at our monthly gatherings. With our pastor's guidance, we reach out to our church family and beyond to pray for each person receiving a shawl, them someone wraps the recipient in the warmth of yarn, cradling the person with our blessings. Often the blessings are passed along by people whp want to "pay ir forward" with their own handmade shawl. Shawls are given for happy events such as a wedding, new home or new baby as well as illness, hospitalization or tragedy.
The yarns are donated or purchased by our members and/or generous givers. We will always accept yarn (preferably not wool, due to sensitivity during an illness) or a monetary donation to help defray our expenses. Anyone is welcome to join our gatherings. Stop by any time and join our fellowship, say a prayer with us or learn to knit/crochet. Reach out and touch someone with love.
